It’s the beginning of the 1960s in Poland and in the Mazurian lake district resides Mikolaj Biesaga, a temperamental widower. As a wounded soldier in WWII, he swears to build a roadside shrine to the Virgin Mary should he survive. The years pass, and Mikolaj, “saved by a miracle”, has not fulfilled his promise. Now, believing his life is nearing its end, decides to keep his pledge. However, static relations between church and state of communist Poland and unexpected love make his mission an adventure he will never forget.
