It is 1965. Andrzej Hoffman is an eminent physician who lives and works in Lodz. After the war he spent a few years in prison. The only evidence in the case against him was a denunciation brought to the Security Services and his wartime activities in the Home Army. One day at work he meets Piotr whom he knew yet from partisan times. Piotr wants to get out of Poland at any cost to start a new and better life in the West. The only way to break with the gray Polish reality is to get a passport and as much money as possible. The only solution is to rob a bank. Piotr had prepared a plan to hold up a bank long ago, but he would need an accomplice. That will be Andrzej, for whom travel out of the country is the last opportunity for him to see his wife and daughter who live in Great Britain. The plot thickens when the authorities want to force Andrzej to collaborate. A functionary of the Security Office blackmails him with false witness accounts that could end his career. Under these circumstances the only way out is to steal the money and get out quickly. Deciding to do the hold-up is only the beginning of the road to “freedom.” Precise preparations involve a swift and bloodless robbery. The plan veers out of control when during the hold-up a guard is wounded. The ambulance takes him to the nearest hospital and the doctor who will operate on him is Andrzej Hoffman. During surgery he must make the most important decision of his life – whether he should save a human life or let the only witness die.
