The Cruise
(Rejs)
The Cruise is considered one of the best films in the history of Polish cinematography, and aficionados who still meet in countless fan clubs can recite whole passages from the film by heart. A stowaway sneaks on board of a Vistula cruise ship. Its captain takes him for a cultural commissar, and the intruder gladly accepts his new role. He arranges an introductory evening which leads to considerable partying and further merriment. The self-styled cultural commissar clearly enjoys his new position and wins allies from among the travellers due to his organisational skills and inclinations. The film creates the impression of spontaneity, and almost resembles a documentary. It is not only an original essay on embarrassment but also a criticism of the denial of human freedom.
