At the beginning of the 20th century, with over 2,000,000 residents, Chicago was the second largest city in the United States. It was and still is the center of Polish culture and political activism in America. Between 1870 and 1920 over 4,000,000 Poles immigrated to the United States in search of a better life. While Poland was partitioned between Russia, Austria and Germany. Chicago became their home. They found employment in factories counted among the most dangerous in the United States. In their neighborhoods, they built churches and a community, but most of all, aided their beloved Poland in her fight for independence. Their story is known as the Fourth Partition.
