On 1 September 1939, the German battleship SMS Schleswig-Holstein opened fire on the Polish garrison at Westerplatte. Thus began the Second World War, at 4.45 am. After seven days of unyielding defense, the Polish crew of Westerplatte, short of supplies and lacking outside help, was forced to surrender. This film tells the tale of a conflict between two great individuals: major Sucharski, the commander of Westerplatte, who was against prolonging the fight he believed doomed from the start; and his deputy, captain Dąbrowski, who wanted to fight until the end. The script is partly based on actual events.
